With firm ground season fast approaching, it can be tricky to know which boots to choose. To make things easier, our ambassador Matt Underhill (you probably know him as RealorFake) has narrowed it down to his top five options right now. Whether you’re after speed, control, or comfort, read on – there’s a pair here ready to give you the edge.
The landscape of football footwear has never been more competitive. In 2026, all brands are pushing boundaries, and my top five features three of the biggest names in the game: Nike, Adidas, and Mizuno. No matter your position, these boots are designed to help you get the very best out of your performance.
The Mercurial line remains one of the most popular models on the market, and the Vapor 16 Elite takes things up another level. Its standout feature is the Air Zoom unit integrated into the plate. Unlike previous iterations, the traction pattern now works in tandem with the Zoom unit to create a propulsive sensation, while also providing a layer of comfort with every step.
Nike has combined Gripknit and Atomknit to produce one of the thinnest uppers to date. It delivers an exceptional barefoot feel, although it does pick up dirt easily. Best suited to narrower feet, this is the ideal choice if you want a close-to-the-ball touch with zero distractions.
The Predator returns with its iconic tongue – and how it has been missed. One of the most recognisable boots of all time, the Predator 25 Elite blends heritage with a modern textile construction.
It offers a slightly wider fit than the Mercurial, providing a more stable platform underfoot. While it does require a short break-in period (particularly around the heel and upper), it soon moulds into a responsive and secure fit. Add in a highly reactive soleplate and strong value for money, and it fully earns its place on this list.
The Phantom 6 Elite has quickly become a personal favourite, evolving from the GX and GT silos into a superb all-round option. It bridges the gap between Mercurial-style speed and the comfort of a more traditional boot.
The upper features a two-layer construction: a Flyknit base for structure and a Gripknit outer for enhanced control. The Cyclone 360 soleplate is designed for quick pivots, helping reduce the risk of getting caught in the turf during sharp turns.
Suitable for wider feet while still offering a secure fit, this is a reliable go-to option – and a strong contender for boot of the year.
Mizuno often flies under the radar, but the Alpha III Elite proves it deserves serious attention. Built for speed, it features a triangular stud configuration that delivers aggressive traction and responsiveness.
What really stands out is how soft it feels straight out of the box – something rarely seen in speed boots. It’s also lighter than most competitors while maintaining impressive durability that often outlasts other models.
While the heel lockdown is not quite as aggressive as the Mercurial, the overall material quality is exceptional.
While many boots focus on being lighter and faster, the Copa Pure 4 Elite is all about timeless quality. It features a Fusionskin upper, blending ultra-soft calfskin leather for a premium, cushioned touch.
This is not a barefoot-style boot – it’s built for comfort and control. The conical stud configuration provides excellent underfoot comfort on firm ground and can even handle some flatter artificial grass surfaces.
Simply put, it’s pure class.
Ultimately, choosing the right firm ground boots comes down to what you value most in your game. If it’s explosive speed and a barefoot feel, the Mercurial and Mizuno Alpha lead the way. For all-round performance, the Phantom stands out as a versatile option, while the Predator delivers a perfect blend of control and heritage. And if comfort is your priority, the Copa Pure remains a timeless choice.
With so many strong options available in 2026, there’s never been a better time to upgrade your boots. Whichever pair you go for, make sure it suits your playing style – because the right boots don’t just complement your game, they elevate it.
