Maybe you want to give it a go because it’s trendy. Maybe it’s because it’s the easiest way to break a sweat after work. Or perhaps you want to run simply because you enjoy being outside. Whatever the reason, having the right kit is the first step – and in this starter pack, we break down the basic kit you’ll need to hit the ground running.
Running is loved by people all over the world – and it’s easy to see why! It’s pretty much free, you can do it in almost any weather (if you’re brave enough), and you can just go at your own pace.
Like any sport, though, a few essentials can make your runs more comfortable. After all, you wouldn’t play footie in heels or dive into a pool wearing jeans (well, you might, but we’re not here to judge). Running is no different: the right footwear and clothing can make a big difference, but with so many options out there, it can be hard to know where to start.
The good news is that you don’t need to break the bank to get started. Social media might make it seem like you can’t call yourself a runner unless you’ve got the latest high-tech shoes or a fully stocked kit drawer, but as a beginner, you really don’t.
Every runner’s journey is different. What works for one person might not work for another, and discovering what suits you is all part of the fun. You can (and should) experiment with shoes, clothing and accessories when you feel ready, without pressure. But if you really don’t know where to start, this starter pack is here for you. Here are the basics that will help you begin with confidence.
First things first: think about what type of running you’ll be doing, because this will shape the kind of gear you need. Trail running, road running, treadmill – believe it or not, there are a few different types – and having the right kit for each one really matters. When you don’t, injuries can happen, and no one wants that.
If you can only invest in one thing, make it a proper pair of running shoes. The right pair can help you avoid injury, improve your running comfort, and keep you on track as you progress. And don’t worry if you’re on a budget – there are plenty of affordable options out there. Just leave your everyday trainers at home; they won’t do you any favours on a run.
When choosing your first pair, you’ll likely come across two main types of running shoes:
If you’re not sure which one you need, that’s where gait analysis comes in. It’s a simple way to understand how you run or walk, helping you find the right shoe type for your movement. It might sound technical, but it’s quick, easy and incredibly helpful – especially for beginners. If you want to learn more about it, check out our gait analysis guide to figure out your perfect fit.
As you get more experienced, you might build up a rotation of running shoes, swapping between a few favourites depending on your training. But for now, sticking to one good pair is all you need.
At Sports Direct, we have thousands of running shoes, for beginners, pros and everyone in between and beyond. With brands like Nike, adidas, ASICS and New Balance, you can find a budget-friendly pair of shoes that still packs in plenty of benefits you’d expect, from cushioning and support to breathable materials.
If you’re unsure on what shoes are right for you, you can use our Running Shoe Finder: all it takes is to answer a few questions regarding your running habits and what you’re looking for and the Finder will do the rest. That said, if you already have an idea of what to go for, go for it!
Your running clothing comes down to personal preference and what you want to wear. However, it’s important to consider things like weather, temperature and comfort.
Generally, we’d suggest opting for moisture-wicking fabrics that allow for breathability. Whatever the weather, when you’re exercising, you sweat, you become wet – and that can be uncomfortable! Moisture-wicking fabrics helps you avoid that – the sweat being wicked away from the skin, allowing you to stay cool and dry. There are plenty of breathable clothing options on the market that won’t break the bank, so you can pick up a few options to try out.
You don’t need tons of running clothing when you’re just getting started, but having a small rotation of clothing you can swap and change to cater for weather highs and lows, comfort and general wear and tear is handy.
If you’re thinking of casual running, or only doing a few kilometres every week (which is completely normal for a beginner – finding your rhythm and preference can take time), you may not be thinking about accessories. But if you are, then here’s a few that you should consider:
Running is the sport that’s accessible and fun, and for the most part, free. Once you’ve got the essentials, which can be bought catered to your own budget, you can lace up and start clocking miles. Although it may seem daunting at first, once you’ve done your first run, we’re sure you’ll already be planning your second, third and fourth.
If you want to take your running beyond a casual after-work jog, there’s plenty of different shoe models, clothing styles and accessories to test out and explore. As well, not only can you join run clubs and use specialised apps to track your workouts, but you can join in on worldwide competitions, from your local 5k to iconic city marathons. The world of running is huge and we can’t wait for you to jump right in.
