GET TO KNOW THE ADIDAS TERREX AGRAVIC SPEED ULTRA 2

Published: 14/07/2026 | By: Alex Courbat

Trail running has had its glow up moment for a while now, but every so often a shoe drops that makes you realise the road super shoe revolution was always going to spill over into the mud eventually. Enter the Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra 2, adidas' answer to the question nobody quite dared ask out loud: what if we took the DNA of a proper road racer and let it loose on gravel, singletrack and everything in between?

If you've followed adidas' road lineup, the name Lightstrike Pro should already mean something to you. It's the same premium foam doing the heavy lifting in their fastest marathon shoes, and here it's been given a trail passport. The result is a midsole designed to deliver a lively, responsive ride, pairing long-distance cushioning with the kind of energy return that's become synonymous with modern road racing shoes. On paper, it's aiming to bring a little of that same fast, efficient character to the trails without sacrificing the protection needed for longer off-road efforts.

The bit that really sets the tone, though, is the rocker. For anyone who hasn't come across the term, a rocker shape is basically a curved sole that rolls your foot forward as you run, a bit like the bottom of a rocking chair. adidas have gone the extra mile with it here, curving the heel so aggressively that it's designed to encourage a quicker transition into your next stride. It's a deliberate, unapologetic design decision, and it's the kind of geometry that you'll either be drawn to immediately or need a few runs to fully appreciate.

Tucked inside the midsole is what adidas call the Energy Rods system, essentially a set of internal supports that add a bit of structural stiffness without turning the shoe into a plank. Picture them as a lightweight skeleton running through the foam, there to stop the ride feeling too soft while still allowing enough natural flex to adapt to changing terrain. It's a clever bit of engineering intended to balance efficiency, stability and responsiveness without making the shoe feel overly rigid.

Two different angles of the Adidas Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra 2

Up top, the mono mesh upper keeps things refreshingly simple. There's no unnecessary bulk here, just a lightweight, breathable construction that's designed to wrap securely around the foot while allowing plenty of airflow. That's something long-distance runners will appreciate once the miles start adding up and feet inevitably begin to swell. Seamless overlays add a welcome layer of protection against trail debris without introducing unnecessary weight or creating pressure points.

Down below, the Continental Rubber outsole is the same trusted compound you'll find on some of adidas' grippiest shoes, and it's designed to provide reliable traction in both wet and dry conditions. The updated lug pattern strikes a sensible balance for fast, flowing trails, gravel tracks and mixed terrain rather than going all-in on deep mud. If your local routes are more hard-packed than boggy, it looks well suited to the job.

It's also worth noting that this is a shoe built with speed in mind first and foremost. The high stack, aggressive rocker and lightweight construction all point towards efficiency rather than outright stability, so it's likely to feel most at home on smoother, runnable terrain where you can settle into a rhythm rather than constantly picking your way through technical rock gardens or awkward off-camber sections.

So who is this actually for? Based on its design, this is a shoe aimed squarely at runners who want to go fast and aren't afraid of a more aggressive ride. Midfoot and forefoot strikers are likely to get the most from the way the rocker and stack height work together, while committed heel strikers may find the geometry takes a little more getting used to. If your ideal day out involves smooth singletrack, gravel roads and long, runnable routes where you can really open things up, the Speed Ultra 2 appears to be built exactly for that kind of ambition. If you're after a plush, forgiving shoe for hiking or tackling highly technical mountain terrain, this probably isn't going to cut it.

There's a real confidence to this shoe, the sort you'd expect from a brand that's spent years refining road racing technology before bringing that expertise properly to the trails. The Terrex Agravic Speed Ultra 2 isn't trying to be everything to everyone. It's built to race, built to move quickly, and built for runners prepared to meet it on its own terms. Whether it earns a place in your rotation will come down to one simple question: are you looking to cruise through the trails, or chase every second you can?
