THE MARATHON CHECKLIST YOU NEED TO SAVE YOUR PRE-RACE DAY NERVES

Published: 06/03/2026 | By: Jasmin Bodman

Obviously, the most important part of a marathon for most people is getting from start to finish - how else are you meant to take a photo with that dazzling medal to post on your socials? But another essential aspect to consider is what to pack. To make sure you don’t panic the night before, we’ve put together this marathon kit checklist to help you pack what you need on race day.

Preparing for your marathon, whether it’s your first or tenth, is incredibly important. Having the essentials makes the day (and you) run smoother. But if you’re unsure what to pack, that’s where we come in. We want you to run confidently and comfortably, finishing your race with the time you’ve been dreaming of.

We’ve put together this marathon kit checklist to give you an idea of what to take with you, from clothing and shoes to accessories and little extras that’ll make all the difference.

CLOTHING TO KEEP YOU COMFORTABLE DURING YOUR MARATHON

What should you consider when choosing clothing for your marathon? It all depends on factors like weather and comfort. It’s better to be prepared for any weather, to avoid freezing or getting soaked through from rain…you know the drill. So here’s a list of essential clothing and footwear you should pack for race-day.

 • Running shoes: a given, of course. Make sure they’re comfortable and fit well, but aren’t worn out
 • Socks: a breathable pair of socks that are going to protect your feet against blisters are best. Look for specific running socks, not just a random pair from the bottom of your drawer
 • Running top: moisture-wicking tops are going to be your best friend. Short or long-sleeved, evaluate the weather before heading out and then adapt your clothing accordingly
 • Shorts or leggings: consider chafe-free options, and look for technical fabrics that offer breathability, flexibility and comfort
 • Sports bra: if you’ve been running for a while, you probably already have your staple sports bra. If not, look at the different types of support and choose the right one for you

Tip: Use our Sports Bra Finder to get a mix of tailored results that’ll suit you, based on a few easy-to-answer questions.

 • Layers: this is where checking the forecast comes in. If it’s raining or windy, consider a rain jacket or wind-breaker. If it’s particularly chilly, take gloves and a cap or hat. If you’re lucky enough to have some sun, grab your sunglasses and cap to stave off the rays

WHAT HYDRATION AND NUTRITION SHOULD I TAKE FOR MY MARATHON?

Running 26.2 miles is a long way - for some people that’s much longer than their commute to work, the school run, even just to the corner shop. So you need to take food and drink that’s going to provide the nutrients you need while on your feet.

 • Water bottle: a small hand-held water bottle will be your best friend. Staying hydrated, especially if it’s warm outside, is essential
 • Hydration vest: if you don’t like the idea of holding a water bottle, why not try a hydration vest? Simply strap it over your top and you’ve got on-the-go hydration
 • Energy bars, snacks and gels: throughout your training, it’s ideal to test out what foods and snacks work for you. Take your favourite energy bars, gels, sweets, snacks, whatever you fancy to give you those energy top-ups as you run

DO I NEED TECH FOR MY MARATHON?

This is entirely up to you, but using a running watch or other bit of tech to track your run can give you insights once you’ve crossed the finish line, which is great for improving in the future. Running watches can provide health-related stats like heart rate, as well as step counts and distance. Make sure your devices, if you’re using any, are fully charged the night before, as well as your mobile phone. Even if you’re not using your phone and you’re handing it over to a spectating friend or family member, you’ll need it for those all-important Instagram shots after.

RACE DAY ESSENTIALS YOU MIGHT NEED BEFORE YOU SET OFF RUNNING

While you have all of your clothing, shoes and kit, there’s also the important race-specific essentials you might need, so it’s worth checking before you make your way to the race location.

 • Race bib and timing chip
 • Your ID with a photo (this is important if you need to pick up your bib beforehand)
 • Any entry paperwork
 • Directions to bag drop off points, and any other information regarding where toilets are along the course

WHAT DO I NEED BEFORE AND AFTER MY MARATHON?

If you’re heading out to celebrate after your race, or are travelling a while to get there, you probably won’t want to be out in just your running gear. Here are a few things to pack for before and after your marathon:

 • Spare clothes to change into and out of (make sure they’re warm and comfortable, especially if it’s cold outside)
 • An unwanted hoodie or jumper: a lot of marathons have the option to discard a layer or two at the start of the race and donate to charity via a charity bin
 • Recovery items like foam rollers and massage balls: help your recovery process by doing easy stretches and active recovery in the days following the race
 • Towel: you’ll probably be sweaty as you head round the course and at the end of the race, so consider taking a small hand towel you can fold up and tuck into your vest or pocket

AVOIDING STRESS ON MARATHON DAY

Race day can be nerve-wracking, but it’s going to be so worth it when you cross that finish line and feel the medal on your chest. While the excitement and nerves have you focusing on the race, it’s important to remember a few things:

 • Don’t try anything new on race day. Clothing, shoes, food… avoid distress and stick with what you’re comfortable with
 • Always check the forecast the day before and on the day. Choose clothes accordingly if needed
 • Pack your bag the night before to avoid rushing the morning of. Write out a quick checklist of everything you need so you can refer back to it
 • Know where you have to drop your bag, where the start line is and the timings

But most importantly, enjoy your marathon!
