What to Wear to GAA Training

GAA - what is it? The Gaelic Athletic Association is in charge of Gaelic games and sports.

Since 1884, it has played an integral part in Ireland’s culture. There’s a lot to learn about the world of GAA, including how fun it can be to participate in, so if you’d like to delve into more detail, you can visit our FAQs.

However, if you know all about the sports included and want to have a go yourself, it’s essential to be prepared. This ‘What to Wear’ guide will help you to decide what kit you should pack for your next GAA training session, whether you’re a novice or a talent on the field.

Top to bottom - what clothes and shoes to consider for GAA training

One of the most important bits of kit is probably your boots. You want something durable, comfortable, supportive and secure. Depending on what ground you’ll be playing on as well, you’ll have to consider if your footwear is weather appropriate.

In terms of clothing, if you’re new to the sport, we’d recommend starting simple by choosing your basics. Opting for a GAA jersey could be a good option if you’re unsure what to wear, as they can offer comfortable fits, moisture-wicking materials as well as a way to showcase your favourite team.

You may want to choose a training top to wear if a jersey isn’t your style, though - aim to pick a lightweight top that wicks away moisture and sweat, so you can stay cool and dry.

Next up is a pair of shorts. Thanks to their flexible fabrics and easy-to-wear designs, you can play freely, with full mobility as you run and manoeuvre on the field.

Another important item to consider packing in your kit bag is a pair (or two) of socks. Mid length socks or knee length, choose a pair that will give you ample comfort and support. You may want to consider a pair with grip too, providing extra security while wearing your boots.

For your hands, a pair of GAA gloves will come in handy for not just warmth, but also grip and comfort while playing.

If you’re playing during the colder months of the year, you may want to consider base layers to go under your kit, or to wear before and after training. With men’s and women’s base layers available, you should consider a lightweight yet warm top and pair of bottoms or shorts. Base layers can also provide extra support if you need it!

A men’s or women’s training jacket might also be useful once your training session is over (or for if it’s particularly cold while playing).

Must-have accessories

You may want to consider grabbing some must-have safety gear for your next GAA game, so you can be fully prepared for whatever’s thrown your way - literally!

A mouthguard is a compulsory item you must wear when training and playing matches, so is essential to include in your kit bag, helping to protect you when participating in games, like hurling, which is a high energy and fast-paced sport. Ensure you have one for all of your training sessions, not just real matches! A helmet is also compulsory to have, enabling you to protect yourself from head to toe when on the field.

Your outfit is complete!

Now you’ve got the basics, you can enjoy whatever GAA sports you’re playing, whether it’s hurling, gaelic football or if you want to try your hand at all of them! Having the right kit will help you to get the most out of your GAA activities and truly embrace the Irish games in style.
