What to Wear Golfing

Updated: 13/01/2025

If you're new to golf, it can be difficult knowing what to wear golfing, especially with the slightly intimidating golf dress codes you hear about. But worry not, we are here to help and show you how easy it is to get all the clothing, footwear and accessories you need to play golf. Reminder: our advice is general, be sure to check the rules of the course you're going to attend.

Golf tops

Let's start with the golf clothing you'll need. Generally, courses follow very similar rules on clothing, with the first being about the top you must wear. Men should wear collared golf tops, either a polo shirt or button-up golf shirt, while women may wear collared or un-collared tops, but all must be tucked in. We recommend purchasing a proper golf top from a reputable brand, as this will offer excellent breathability, flexibility and moisture-wicking properties, keeping you cool and dry while not inhibiting your swing.

Golf bottoms

In terms of what to tuck that golf top into, you have two options. In the summer, wear knee length golf shorts (or skirts for women), in the winter, wear golf trousers. These are smart-looking bottoms to acknowledge the tradition of golfing attire, but modern sportswear fabrics and fits ensure they are supremely comfortable and look great too. Jeans, joggers, leggings and any other casual bottoms are not permitted.

Golf jumpers and outerwear

You should also look at getting some golf jumpers or sweaters for when the weather is cooler, plus a waterproof golf jacket is an essential purchase because, unfortunately, it often rains! Like golf tops and trousers, golf jumpers and jackets tend to provide a smart aesthetic along with excellent functionality.

Golf footwear

Now your clothing is sorted, let's look at footwear. Golf shoes are an essential purchase to keep you looking smart, feeling comfortable and standing upright throughout the full 18, though rules on wearing trainers have become more relaxed in recent years. A lot of golf course dress codes forbid metal spikes on your golf shoes, so best to stick to soft spikes made of rubber or plastic. No sandals, boots, flip flops, sliders or high heels on the golf course, please!

Accessories for golf

Some accessories you might want to also keep in your golf bag include hats, sunglasses, socks and gloves. Caps, visors and sunglasses are ideal for sunny weather, while beanies are often worn on golf courses during the winter. Most golfers wear a golf glove on their non-dominant hand for superior grip and we'd always recommend this. Finally, a funky pair of socks will go down a treat as the final flourish to your golfing ensemble.
