GET TO KNOW THE ASICS NOVABLAST 6

Published: 08/07/2026 | By: Alex Courbat

The Novablast has become something of a phenomenon. In just a few generations, it's gone from being the quirky option in ASICS' running line-up to the shoe countless runners reach for without thinking twice. That's because it never chased extremes. It wasn't trying to be a race shoe pretending to be a daily trainer, nor was it an overbuilt max-cushion cruiser. Instead, it found the sweet spot. It was comfortable, energetic, surprisingly versatile and, most importantly, it made everyday running feel a little less ordinary. Which makes the Novablast 6 a fascinating release.

Instead of polishing an already successful formula, ASICS has chosen to challenge it. On paper, the changes make perfect sense. A new FF Turbo Squared pod sits beneath the forefoot, bringing one of the brand's premium foams into its best-selling trainer, while FF Blast Max continues to cushion the rest of the midsole. There's a lighter woven upper, improved ASICSGRIP rubber under the forefoot and subtle geometry tweaks designed to keep you moving forwards. It sounds like the obvious next step. Out on the road, though, the Novablast 6 feels less like an evolution and more like a different interpretation of what a Novablast should be.

The biggest change isn't the new foam itself, it's how the shoe delivers its energy. Most daily trainers try to create one consistent feeling from heel strike to toe-off, smoothing everything into a predictable rhythm. The Novablast 6 doesn't. It almost has two personalities. The heel is soft, protective and relatively subdued, absorbing impact without much drama. Then, as your weight shifts forwards, the FF Turbo Squared pod comes alive and the shoe suddenly feels eager to get on with things. It doesn't gently roll you through your stride. It gives you a little nudge, almost asking, "Well, are we running or not?"

That makes the Novablast 6 a more engaging shoe than its predecessor, but also a more demanding one. The Novablast 5 seemed happy to adapt to however you ran. The Novablast 6 wants you to meet it halfway. Runners who naturally land around the midfoot will probably unlock the best version of this shoe, enjoying the springy toe-off that makes steady miles feel lighter than they should. Heel strikers can still enjoy it, but they'll notice the contrast between the softer rearfoot and more energetic forefoot far more. Whether that feels exciting or slightly awkward will come down to personal preference.

The upper follows a similar philosophy. The woven material is light, breathable and disappears beautifully once you're moving, while the tongue locks the foot down without creating pressure across the midfoot. Around the heel, however, ASICS has doubled down on comfort with generous padding that creates an undeniably plush feel. It's luxurious, but it also makes the fit feel a touch shorter than previous Novablasts. It's a small compromise in the pursuit of comfort, but one worth knowing before buying.

The outsole is a quieter upgrade, yet arguably one of the smartest. Previous Novablasts could feel a little uncertain when roads became wet, but the addition of ASICSGRIP rubber under the forefoot finally gives the shoe the confidence its lively ride deserves. It isn't the sort of feature you'll notice every run, but it's exactly the sort of improvement that makes a shoe easier to trust over months of training.

What's perhaps most interesting about the Novablast 6 is where it now sits in the market. Daily trainers have become increasingly similar over the last few years. Everyone promises soft cushioning, effortless comfort and all-day versatility. The Novablast 6 pushes back against that trend by injecting a bit of personality into the category. It feels more playful than a Saucony Ride 19, more dynamic than a New Balance 1080 and more forgiving than a plated super trainer. In many ways, it's become the bridge between traditional daily trainers and shoes like the Superblast, borrowing some of that sense of excitement without demanding the same financial commitment.

That does come with a trade-off. The Novablast 5 succeeded because almost anyone could lace it up and immediately understand why people loved it. The Novablast 6 is a shoe you'll probably form an opinion on within the first few miles. Some runners will appreciate the livelier front end and the sense that the shoe is always encouraging the next stride. Others may miss the calmer, more balanced character that made the previous version such an easy recommendation.
