GET TO KNOW THE NIKE PEGASUS 42

Published: 12/05/2026 | By: Alfie Manthorpe

The Nike Pegasus 42 isn’t trying to reinvent running shoes. It’s not the wildest, softest or fastest shoe out there – and that’s exactly what makes it so good. It’s reliable, versatile and just feels great to run in, which is why it’s remained a go-to for so many runners over the years. Here’s pro runner and running ambassador Alfie Manthorpe’s take on why the latest version might be one of the best yet.

The goal of a running shoe should always be to provide cushion and support for the runner. Beyond that, everything else is more of an added feature.

Carbon-plated shoes are there to help you run faster. High stack shoes give you maximum protection. Heavily engineered shoes, like the Nike Vomero Premium, are designed to make running feel as easy as possible.

These types of shoes are great for their specific purpose, but sometimes a runner needs a shoe that can do a bit of everything. The shoe you’d want if you could only use one pair. It doesn’t need to excel in one single category. What actually makes it exceptional is its ability to be an option across the board.

This is where the Nike Pegasus line comes in.

The Pegasus and its love from runners has been turbulent. There have been some great shoes over the years, other models not so much. But the 42nd version feels like one of the best yet. It’s an evolution of what the Pegasus does best: being a daily workhorse that just works. For a lot of things.

There’s a lot of subjectivity with running shoes. The way they’re designed can make it difficult to suggest one shoe for the running masses.

Sometimes perfecting simple features is better than reinventing the wheel. That’s exactly what makes the Nike Pegasus 42 easy to recommend to everyone from a new runner to an elite. It’s a shoe that ticks all the boxes, nothing more and nothing less.

  • Comfortable: check
  • Smooth ride: check
  • Good cushioning: check
  • Breathable upper: check
  • Feels good at a wide variety of paces: check

That is the sweet spot for a daily trainer.

For a beginner, it gives you comfort and support without being too aggressive. For a more experienced runner, it’s the type of shoe that can sit in your rotation for easy days, steady runs and general mileage. As an elite myself, I'm trying to avoid always training in super shoes, and having a shoe like the Nike Pegasus 42 for tempos, threshold sessions, long runs, drills and so on is a great way to train more ‘honestly’.

The Pegasus 42 uses ReactX foam and an Air Zoom unit. In simple terms, the foam is there to give you the cushioning and the Air Zoom unit adds a bit of spring.

It feels soft, but not squishy. There’s enough cushioning to take the edge off the ground, but it doesn’t feel like you’re sinking into the shoe. It has a bit of response, but it doesn’t feel aggressive or like it’s forcing you to run fast.

That balance is what makes it so useful.

Some shoes feel amazing for one type of run, then slightly awkward for everything else. The Pegasus 42 avoids that. It gives you enough of everything without going too far in one direction. I've also been wearing it in the gym and just out and about.

One of the key upgrades in the Pegasus 42 is the full-length Air Zoom unit. Again, that sounds more technical than it needs to. What it really means is that the shoe feels smoother from landing to toe-off. Instead of feeling like the cushioning is split into sections, the ride feels more connected and isn't dependent on if you were a heel, midfoot or forefoot striker.

The upper is another area where the Pegasus 42 feels improved. It uses a double-layer mesh upper, which helps keep the shoe breathable and lightweight. It gives the shoe a comfortable feel without making it feel too thin or flimsy.

There’s padding around the heel and tongue, which gives you that step-in comfort people expect from an everyday trainer. The midfoot feels secure, so your foot isn’t sliding around, but the toe box feels slightly roomier than before. This comes in clutch on longer runs, because your feet naturally swell a little, so, if a shoe is too tight at the front, it can become annoying and potentially cause blisters.

A daily trainer needs to be durable. There’s no point in a shoe feeling good for a few runs if it starts to feel flat too quickly.

The Pegasus 42 keeps that classic waffle-style outsole, which is one of the things the Pegasus line is known for. It gives reliable grip on roads and footpaths while still giving good traction for things like drills and sprints.

An issue I've found with many shoes that have great grip is that the outsole usually feels too firm and ruins the feel of the cushioning. You could have the best foam in the world but with a firm or overly thick outsole the shoe can feel stiff. You don't have this in the Pegasus 42.

The Nike Pegasus 42 is not trying to be everything all at once. It’s not pretending to be a race shoe. It’s not going too extreme. It’s simply a very good everyday neutral running shoe. It has enough cushioning to feel protective. Enough response to feel enjoyable. Enough comfort to wear regularly. Enough durability to handle repeated daily use. And enough versatility to suit a wide range of runners.

If you’re new to running, it’s a safe and reliable place to start. If you train more consistently, it’s a solid daily workhorse that can handle plenty of miles at different paces. Sometimes the best running shoe isn’t the one with the loudest tech story, sometimes it’s the one you trust to do the job every time you put it on.

That’s the Nike Pegasus 42.
