ENGLAND'S WORLD CUP 2026: BEST FINISH SINCE '66 PROVES THE FOUNDATIONS ARE THERE

There is plenty to celebrate after a tournament that delivered England’s best World Cup finish since that famous afternoon at Wembley in ‘66. But a proper review should be honest as well as positive. This World Cup confirmed England’s strengths while exposing the remaining tactical questions that will determine whether they can take the final step from contenders to champions.
England are no longer a team hoping everything falls perfectly into place. They have elite players, a deeper squad, greater tactical flexibility and the resilience required to compete deep into major tournaments. The challenge now is not building the foundations. It’s refining the details that separate excellent teams from winners.
England arrived in North America carrying familiar expectations, although the atmosphere around the squad felt different under Tuchel. His first year in charge had brought a more aggressive approach without the ball, greater adaptability between formations and a clearer understanding of how to balance England’s outstanding young talent with the experience of established leaders.
By the end of the tournament, that progress was obvious. England won matches in different ways, handled difficult environments and produced some of the most impressive football played by any European side. They also discovered where the final gap to the very best teams still remains.
The group stage followed a pattern England supporters have become familiar with: moments that suggested something special, followed by enough frustration to create unnecessary doubt.
The opening 4-2 victory over Croatia was the statement performance everyone had hoped for. A near-perfect opening game to set the tone. Harry Kane converted penalties either side of half-time, Jude Bellingham controlled the midfield and Marcus Rashford added late gloss to a display built on attacking intent.
The most encouraging aspect was not simply the result, but the way England attacked. They were not relying entirely on Kane to create and finish everything. When possession was regained, the wingers repeatedly attacked the space beyond him, stretching Croatia’s defensive line and giving Bellingham room to operate between the lines. It was the type of aggressive, fluid football Tuchel had promised.
But the goalless draw with Ghana provided the first reminder that England’s evolution is not complete. Elite international teams regularly struggle against disciplined defensive blocks. The concern was how predictable England became when Ghana refused to engage.
Possession was controlled but often sterile. The ball moved comfortably around the outside of Ghana’s defensive shape, yet England lacked enough positional rotations to force the block apart. Full-backs became increasingly cautious, fewer players attacked the spaces between midfield and defence, and Kane’s tendency to drop deep became less effective because there were not always enough runners immediately threatening behind him.
That remains one of the biggest tactical questions for Tuchel. Against teams prepared to sit deep, England have the technical quality to control matches, but they need more variety in how they turn possession into chances.
A composed 2-0 victory over Panama secured top spot in Group L and shifted attention back towards the positives. It was not spectacular, but tournament football often rewards efficiency as much as brilliance.
The knockout rounds offered a clearer picture of England’s development. Against DR Congo, England initially struggled against an opponent determined to disrupt their rhythm and deny them space. The match became physical and uncomfortable, and for the first time in the tournament England looked less convincing when the game moved away from a technical battle.
The response was encouraging. Rather than forcing attacks through the centre, England adjusted by creating overloads in wider areas and stretching Congo’s compact structure. The breakthrough eventually came through Kane, whose late double settled the match, but the bigger takeaway was tactical. England were finding solutions. That ability to adapt became even more important against Mexico.
The round-of-16 tie presented a completely different challenge. The altitude, the atmosphere and the intensity of the occasion created one of the most difficult environments England faced all tournament. Bellingham initially put England in control with two superbly timed runs into the penalty area before Julián Quiñones reduced the deficit. Then came the biggest test of their mentality. Jarell Quansah’s red card left England with more than half an hour to defend a lead with ten men against a Mexico side energised by both the crowd and momentum.
Many England teams of previous generations would have reacted by retreating completely and attempting to survive. This side responded differently. Tuchel reorganised the midfield rather than simply adding bodies behind the ball. Declan Rice protected the defence, Bellingham covered huge distances between attacking and defensive phases, and Kane continued to occupy Mexico’s centre-backs instead of becoming isolated in a deep defensive shape. England still defended, but they retained a threat.
That was crucial. The ability to relieve pressure through controlled possession and intelligent counter-attacks prevented Mexico from creating an endless series of attacks. England defended in shorter, more manageable spells rather than spending the entire match inside their own penalty area. Winning 3-2 with ten men in that environment was about more than resilience. It showed tactical maturity. England adapted without abandoning their identity.
The quarter-final against Norway demonstrated another important development: England no longer needed Kane to decide every major match.
The pre-match focus naturally centred on Kane against Erling Haaland, but both strikers were largely contained by disciplined defensive structures. Norway limited Kane’s influence between the lines, while England’s defenders prevented Haaland from repeatedly attacking space behind them.
Instead, England found another solution. Jude increasingly operated beyond Norway’s midfield rather than alongside Rice, timing his late runs into dangerous areas. His equaliser before half-time changed the momentum of the game, and his extra-time winner completed another outstanding performance. The significance was bigger than one result. England had found another route to victory.
The semi-final against Argentina ultimately provided the clearest indication of both England’s progress and their remaining weakness. For an hour, they matched the reigning world champions. They defended with discipline, pressed intelligently and, after Anthony Gordon gave them the lead, looked capable of reaching the final.
Tuchel’s plan had largely worked. England denied Argentina space in transition, forced them into wider areas and created danger whenever Bellingham or Morgan Rogers carried the ball through midfield. Argentina were struggling to find the same rhythm that had taken them through the tournament.
But after taking the lead, England gradually lost control.
The turning point was not simply Argentina increasing their attacking pressure. It was England changing the way they defended. Their midfield dropped deeper, their pressing became less aggressive and their possession became increasingly limited. Instead of continuing to control the match, England gradually shifted towards protecting their advantage, and Tuchel responded by adding more defensive players as Argentina’s pressure grew. That distinction mattered.
Against Mexico, defending deep had been a necessity because of Quansah’s red. Against Argentina, it became a choice. England’s attacking players became increasingly isolated, and every clearance invited another wave of pressure rather than providing genuine relief.
Argentina’s experience showed. They began dominating territory, circulating the ball patiently and moving England’s defensive block from side to side. Their midfield found more space, their full-backs advanced higher and England were forced into longer periods without the ball.
The issue was not that England defended poorly. Their organisation remained impressive and they continued to compete in difficult moments. The problem was that against a team of Argentina’s quality, constant defending eventually becomes unsustainable.
The late equaliser and winner were not the result of England lacking character. They were the consequence of allowing Argentina too much control for too long. The defeat was a lesson in game management. England have learned how to suffer. They have learned how to defend. What they must now learn is when not to.
Against elite opponents, possession can be as valuable as defensive structure. Keeping the ball for five more minutes, forcing the opponent to defend and allowing the team to reset can sometimes protect a lead more effectively than adding another defender.
That is the next stage of Tuchel’s work: understanding when control comes from organisation, and when it comes from having the courage to continue playing.
The third-place play-off against France provided a positive ending. It was chaotic, open and entertaining, with Bukayo Saka producing the performance of his tournament in a 6-4 victory. The result itself should not be overinterpreted, but the performance reinforced a broader point: England now have match-winners across the pitch. They are no longer entirely dependent on Kane.
That does not mean Kane’s importance has diminished. His movement, creativity and finishing remain central to England’s attacking identity. The challenge is ensuring the team remain dangerous when opponents successfully reduce his influence.
The solution is not replacing Kane. It is creating more mechanisms around him. When Kane drops deep, England need runners attacking the space he leaves behind. Against Norway, Bellingham provided that solution. Against Argentina, England struggled to find a consistent alternative route forward.
The tournament also confirmed England’s midfield as one of their greatest strengths. Bellingham was arguably the most influential midfielder at the competition. His technical ability was obvious, but his mentality stood out just as much. In the biggest moments, England looked towards him for solutions, and he repeatedly delivered.
Rice provided the balance that allowed him to do so. His contribution was less dramatic but equally important. He protected the defence, recovered possession and gave Bellingham the freedom to influence matches higher up the pitch.
International tournaments are often decided by midfield control, and England finally possess the kind of central quality previous generations lacked.
So, what did this World Cup ultimately prove? England can now compete in different types of football matches. They can overwhelm opponents through attacking quality. They can survive difficult physical battles. They can manage adversity and compete with the best teams in the world.
The remaining questions are tactical rather than structural.
They need more solutions against deep defensive blocks. They need greater attacking movement around Kane. And they need to become better at controlling matches after taking the lead against elite opponents.
Those are difficult problems, but they are much healthier problems than the ones England carried for decades. The hardest foundations have already been built. Elite midfielders, genuine match-winners and tournament resilience are no longer ambitions. They are realities.
Now comes the final challenge: turning a team capable of reaching the latter stages of major tournaments into one capable of finishing the job.
Bellingham will improve. Saka will improve. The depth beneath them continues to grow, and Tuchel now has a full tournament’s evidence of both what this side does exceptionally well and where it must evolve.
Sixty years after England last reached these heights at a World Cup, there is finally a convincing argument that the next step is closer than people think. England are no longer trying to prove they belong among the contenders. They are trying to prove they can become champions.
2030 can’t come soon enough but for now, thank you England – you’ve done us proud!
