Football: a sport known around the globe and loved by many, with leagues and tournaments that take the world by storm, bringing fans and players together. But if you're planning on playing, you need the kit to help you score.
Whether you’re thinking of playing yourself or want to stay clued up on which boots go with what pitch, then we have you covered.
This is our comprehensive football boot guide, helping you choose the correct boots when you step up to the pitch to play. Wearing the wrong boots can possibly lead to damage to the pitch and injury, so if you’re unsure, check with your coach what boots are best for you.
FIRM GROUND BOOTS
Let’s kick things off (literally!) with firm ground boots. Designed for firm ground surfaces, you may find these boots best suited for dry surfaces where the grass is kept short. FG boots tend to have multiple studs in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Firm ground boots (or FG boots) are designed for natural, short grass surfaces. The studs you’d typically find on these boots can be beneficial on slightly wet surfaces, offering traction when you need it most, dispersing stud pressure across the foot.
They should provide you with plenty of comfort and stability so that you can navigate the harder, dry conditions easily.
SOFT GROUND BOOTS
If you live in the UK, you know the weather doesn’t always want to play ball. From soggy grass to wet pitches, you need boots that are going to cooperate with the surface so you can focus on the game.
Soft ground boots tend to have conical-shaped studs, helping to battle against the testing terrain and providing a secure grip. You’ll also want your SG boots to provide ample comfort and stability.
INDOOR FOOTBALL BOOTS
Indoor boots are ideal for playing on indoor pitches - whether it’s a practice session with friends or the weather is unforgiving, indoor football can be just as thrilling.
Made with safety in mind, indoor boots tend to offer a tailored rubber sole, aiding in control and security.
You should avoid your artificial or turf boots when playing inside, as they can’t provide the same level of traction you need and could cause injury or damage to the surface.
The best indoor football shoes consist of a combination of control, comfort and traction.
ARTIFICIAL GRASS OR ASTROTURF FOOTBALL BOOTS
If you’re venturing onto artificial grass or Astroturf, then 3G boots can be a good option, or boots that are specifically made for this surface. You shouldn’t wear boots with blades, but short, hollowed studs can be suitable. Remember, if you’re unsure, it’s best to check with your coach or organiser to see what they’d recommend.
When looking for this boot type, consider if they are secure and comfortable, equipped with a durable rubber sole, great for traction.
If you’ve ever found yourself asking whether you can wear your trusty firm-ground boots on artificial grass then you may want to rethink packing them in your kit bag. AG boots are crafted with shorter, hollowed-out studs, which bring great grip to your footwear and aid in taking strain off joints and knees. FG boots can lead to shocks through the joints if worn on an artificial grass pitch, which you want to avoid if trying to emulate your footballing heroes.
WHAT BOOTS ARE SUITABLE FOR 3G PITCHES?
Firstly, what is a 3G pitch? The 3G stands for Third Generation and it is a type of artificial football pitch that’s normally made from rubber crumb, sand and synthetic grass.
Normally, artificial grass football boots (AG) are suitable for playing on 3G pitches; these can offer the best performance and stability. Boots with a plastic soleplate or moulded studs are also recommended.
It’s not advisable to wear studs on a 3G pitch. Most blades or full studded boots are banned from artificial venues as it poses safety risks as well as damage to the surface.
WHAT BOOTS ARE SUITABLE FOR 4G PITCHES?
Like with a 3G pitch, artificial grass boots are the best choice if playing on a 4G pitch. AG boots tend to be made specifically for synthetic surfaces, offering hollowed-out studs which absorb the harsh impact of the pitch.
Again, you should avoid wearing blades or studs found on the likes of soft ground boots as these aren’t suitable and can damage pitches and cause an injury risk.
3G AND 4G DIFFERENCES
The difference between a 3G and 4G pitch is the construction. A 3G pitch consists of a few elements: synthetic turf, sand infill, rubber infill and performance infill. A 4G, or Fourth Generation, pitch is made from synthetic turf.
PACKING YOUR KIT BAG WITH THE RIGHT BOOTS
Whether you’re starting out at a five-a-side club with friends or you’ve been playing on a grass pitch for years, having the right boots is essential.
Avoid injury and damage to surfaces by wearing the correct boots and practice your skills to become the next best thing.
