MANCHESTER UNITED 26/27 AWAY KIT: ADIDAS GOES BACK TO THE RIVER IRWELL

Published: 29/06/2026 | By: Alex Courbat

Some kits chase the future. This one goes looking for the past, then makes it feel brand new. Manchester United and adidas have just dropped the 26/27 away kit, and it’s one of the more thoughtful pieces of design work to land at Old Trafford in years, built on a colour story that United fans have not worn on matchday in almost four decades.

The headline is royal blue. It is the shade that defined United's away kit back in 1988, worn by a Red Devils side under Alex Ferguson still finding its feet, and it returns here as the base for a shirt that trades pure nostalgia for something more layered. Running through the blue is a wave pattern, embossed rather than printed, that traces the movement of the River Irwell, the waterway that curls past Old Trafford and Salford and has quietly shaped the club's sense of place for over a century. Fans have sung about the banks of the Irwell for generations. Now it is stitched into the shirt itself.

Red and white detailing breaks up the blue across the collar and sleeve cuffs, and adidas has brought back its classic Trefoil logo for the occasion, a deliberate nod to the branding of the late Eighties rather than the brand's modern three-bar mark. It is a small design choice that does a lot of work, anchoring the shirt firmly in 1988 without tipping into a straight reissue. Clubs that lean on their archives well tend to update the reference rather than copy it, and that is exactly what has happened here.

Performance-wise, this is very much a 2026 shirt wearing a 1988 jacket. adidas has built it from doubleknit fabric with Climacool technology woven through, designed to wick sweat and keep the wearer cool over ninety minutes, while the slim-fit cut and V-neck give it a sharper, more tailored silhouette than the shirts this design is drawing from. That combination, heritage colourway with genuinely modern construction, has become something of an adidas signature across its football range this year, and it suits United's away kit well. The woven club crest and signature 3-Stripes complete a shirt that reads as authentic on the rail and functional in a five-a-side.

That blend of heritage and innovation extends across the wider collection. Manchester United's goalkeeper away jerseys have launched alongside the outfield shirt too, built on adidas's 2026 Trefoil goalkeeper template and available in Pearl Pink and Yellow, complete with a subtle embossed brick pattern lifted from adidas's 1994 goalkeeper shirts. It is a strong bit of range-building, tying the outfield and goalkeeper kits together under one retro-forward story.

For supporters, the appeal here is fairly simple. This is a shirt that lets you wear a piece of 1988 without looking like you have stepped out of a museum cabinet, built with the kind of fabric technology that means it holds up whether you are stood on the terraces or playing Sunday league. Paired with blue shorts and socks, it is one of the more complete away kit stories United have told in years, and proof that the best throwback design does not just copy the archive. It listens to it.
