ONE LAST DANCE: MESSI AND ADIDAS REVEAL THE F50 'EL ÚLTIMO TANGO'

Published: 16/06/2026, By: Alex Courbat

Twenty years after his first World Cup appearance, Lionel Messi returns to football's biggest stage with a boot that connects the beginning of his journey to what is widely expected to be its final chapter. For the occasion, adidas have unveiled the F50 'El Último Tango' – a design rooted in memory, but engineered for the demands of the modern game.

Cast your mind back to Germany in 2006. An 18-year-old Messi stepped off the bench against Serbia and Montenegro and announced himself to the world with a goal, an assist and a glimpse of the brilliance that would define the next two decades. On his feet sat the adidas F50.6 TUNIT, one of the most distinctive speed boots of its generation. The same model now provides the foundation for the latest chapter in Messi's signature story.

Rather than simply revisiting the past, adidas have chosen to connect it with the present. The result is what the brand describes as the F50.6 Future concept: a fusion of the visual identity that accompanied Messi's first World Cup and the performance technology that will carry him into the next one.

While previous tournament editions leaned heavily into gold finishes and celebratory aesthetics, El Último Tango takes a more considered route. Officially dressed in Ivory, Semi Blue Burst and Ice Blue, the colourway draws heavily from Argentina's national identity without feeling overly literal.

A clean ivory base provides the canvas, while sky-blue detailing references the colours that have followed Messi throughout his international career. Gold accents appear sparingly across the design, adding a premium finish without overwhelming the overall look. Meanwhile, the reworked Three Stripes graphic injects a sharper, more contemporary edge, balancing heritage influences with a distinctly modern execution.

The result feels less like a farewell product and more like a visual timeline. One that links Rosario to Germany, Germany to Qatar, and Qatar to the next chapter still waiting to be written.

Of course, beneath the storytelling sits a boot designed for elite-level performance.

The El Último Tango arrives on adidas' latest F50 Hyperfast platform, combining lightweight construction with a series of updates focused on speed and responsiveness. The upper is built around HybridTouch+, delivering a close connection between foot and ball while maintaining the streamlined feel expected from a modern speed boot.

A lace cover with hook-and-loop closure creates a cleaner striking surface, while the HALOCAGE+ structure reinforces key pressure zones to support aggressive changes of direction and explosive movement.

Lockdown comes via the HALOBELT+ construction, an adaptive tunnel-style tongue system designed to keep the foot secure without creating unnecessary restriction. Combined with the lightweight build of the upper, the setup is geared towards maintaining comfort at high speeds.

Underfoot, the F50 SPEEDSYSTEM+ soleplate pairs bladed traction with cored tooling to reduce weight while preserving the responsiveness required for rapid acceleration. A Lightstrike Pro sockliner completes the package, adding a layer of cushioning beneath one of adidas' most speed-focused silhouettes to date.

It is a fitting blend of old and new: a design inspired by the boot Messi wore at the start of his World Cup journey, sitting atop technology built for the game's modern demands.

More than just another signature release, the F50 'El Último Tango' feels like a marker in football history. By drawing a line between Messi's first World Cup and what is expected to be his last, adidas have created a boot that carries genuine narrative weight alongside elite-level performance credentials.

Whether they end up on the pitch or on display, the F50 'El Último Tango' stands out as one of the defining football boot releases of the World Cup cycle.

The adidas F50 'El Último Tango' is available now via Sports Direct and selected adidas Football retailers.
