GET TO KNOW THE NEW BALANCE SC ELITE V6

When hundreds of hours of training come down to a couple of seconds on the clock, there’s no such thing as an incidental shoe choice. New Balance gets that with the SC Elite v6, a racer that doesn’t just fiddle with the formula, but has a proper rethink about what this shoe is here to do.

The result is a sharper, lighter, more purposeful racer that feels less like an all-rounder in race-day clothing and more like it’s got somewhere to be. And there’s plenty to unpack in how New Balance got it there. 

The biggest change is underfoot. Infinion replaces the FuelCell foam from the v5, and the difference is immediate. The v5 could feel a little muted when you really asked questions of it, whereas the v6 has that instant pop you’re looking for when the pace starts getting spicy. There’s more rebound, more snap and, crucially, more of that feeling that the shoe wants to go as fast as you do. You notice it within a few strides. No need for a spreadsheet and a three-run testing protocol. 

The plate has had a rethink, too. It’s thicker and stiffer through the forefoot, while the geometry has become noticeably more aggressive. The heel bevel reaches further into the midfoot and the forefoot rocker kicks in earlier, giving the whole shoe a stronger sense of forward momentum. Where the v5 was happy to roll along at your chosen pace, the v6 is rather more interested in helping you find another gear. 

Then there’s the weight. At 198g, the v6 drops a useful chunk from the 213g men's 9.5 of the v5. That’s not a revolutionary number on its own, but you feel it when you’re deep into a race and every gram starts to feel like it’s got a personal vendetta against your calves. 

A lot of that saving comes from the outsole. The rubber is thinner, with cutouts through the forefoot and medial heel where the v5 carried more coverage. You might expect that to compromise grip, but it doesn’t feel like a trade-off worth worrying about. The outsole still bites into the road confidently, which is exactly what you want when British weather decides race day is the perfect moment for a plot twist. There’s exposed midsole through the midfoot on both shoes, too, so that’s likely to be where the wear shows first. 

Up top, the v6’s mesh has gone from simply thin to properly translucent, and the difference in airflow is noticeable once the effort starts climbing. New Balance’s FANTOMFIT construction bonds the overlays directly to the mesh rather than stitching them on, helping the upper wrap around the foot without bringing a load of unnecessary baggage along for the ride. 

The fit itself remains familiar. The v6 still feels secure through the heel and midfoot, while giving the toes more room and volume than plenty of modern racers. The biggest change comes at the back. The v5’s heel counter had a little more structure, while the v6 uses smaller overlays and flexes much more freely. If you’ve ever had a stiff heel counter making itself known somewhere around kilometre 32, that’ll be a welcome bit of housekeeping. 

On paper, the numbers barely move. Both sit at 40mm in the heel, 32mm in the forefoot and an 8mm drop. Put them on, though, and the family resemblance starts to fade.  

The v5 still makes sense for runners who want a lighter shoe with a bit more forgiveness and stability built into the ride. It’s got a broader appeal and doesn’t demand quite as much commitment from the runner. 

The v6 is a different proposition. It’s more focused, more animated and much more obviously built around the business end of racing. From a sharp 5K to the marathon, it feels like New Balance has stopped trying to make one shoe do everything and instead asked a much simpler question: what do you want underneath you when it’s time to race? 

Turns out, the answer is something that wants to get on with it.
