What To Wear Running In The Rain
Published: TBC/09/2026 | By: Dominic Toner
Rain shouldn't get a vote on whether you run. With the right kit, running in the rain goes from a daunting idea to something you actually look forward to. As the harsher, wetter weather rolls in, staying consistent can feel like a battle, but it doesn't have to wreck your routine. Once you're layered up properly, the rain just becomes part of the run rather than the thing stopping it.
It's tempting to put a run off when you can hear the rain hammering the window, telling yourself you'll go tomorrow. We've all done it. The hardest part is almost always getting out of the door. Once you're out there and your legs are pumping, the rain stops feeling like such a big deal. The weather doesn't need to wreck your training schedule.
Getting past that initial dread gives you a massive sense of achievement. There's real satisfaction in ticking off a run on a day when plenty of people have written it off as "too wet". It shows proper mental toughness. Plus, walking back through the door knowing you didn't let the weather win makes that hot shower feels unreal.
If the weather isn't on your side and you're wondering what to put on, you're in the right place. Here's our guide to what to wear for running in the rain.
Your First Line Of Defence: Water-Resistant And Waterproof Running Jackets
Your jacket is the MVP of any rainy run. Ideally, you want one that keeps the rain off without turning you into a human sauna. There's a difference between water-resistant and fully waterproof, and if you pick the wrong one, you'll end up soaked, either from the rain or your own sweat.
A water-resistant jacket or lightweight windbreaker handles light rain and showers. Think the Men's Nike Miler Repel Running Jacket or Women's The North Face Windproof Pack Away Jacket. Both use water-resistant fabric to keep you dry on your outdoor runs while staying breathable enough to stop you baking. They look the part as the finishing touch on your outfit too!
Tip: If your water-resistant jacket has a hood, try wearing a cap underneath to keep it in place
If the heavens open, that's when you need something fully waterproof, and no, that doesn't mean skipping your session. There are plenty of waterproof running jackets built with a streamlined fit that block out heavy rain completely. Grab something like the Men's adidas Track Gore-Tex Waterproof Jacket and you're fully shielded when the weather turns nasty. It's a reliable, practical layer that keeps you bone dry without slowing you down.
Shine Bright: Reflective And Hi-Vis Running Gear For Wet Weather
When it's dark and grey, being visible is essential. Torrential rain and road spray don't help, so throw on a jacket with reflective details or hi-vis. It's a small change with a big payoff:
- Stand out early: Traffic has plenty of time to slow down or move over
- No worries: Focusing on your run gets easier when you know you're visible and safe
- Look stylish: A sharp fluorescent outer layer will pop against a gloomy grey sky
Waterproof Running Shoes And Socks: Because Soggy Feet Are The Worst
Once you're visible, keeping your feet dry is non-negotiable. Look after them with proper footwear on wet runs to avoid any damage. Squelching around in soaked shoes is the absolute worst, and letting your feet get damp ruins the whole run. Fortunately, the latest collection of running shoes and socks makes running outdoors in the rain both comfortable and enjoyable.
Shoes are an essential part of a runner's kit, even more so in the rain. Tackle the autumn downpours with waterproof running shoes that keep the wet out. You can find a pair that's breathable and lightweight while still giving you enough grip to stop you skidding around like Bambi on ice. It's the easiest way to keep your outdoor routine going as the days get shorter and wetter. Try the Men's Nike Pegasus Trail 5 GORE-TEX Running Shoes or the Women's Karrimor Caracal Waterproof Trainers.
As for socks, even though they're mostly hidden, they do serious work. Find a pair that keeps your feet dry without the bulk of heavier waterproof socks. They're a second layer of defence underneath your shoes, helping to avoid rubbing and blisters.
Running Accessories For Rainy Weather: Complete The Fit
There are plenty of extras that make running in the wet a lot smoother. For runners who like to wrap up with hats and gloves, there's a fantastic collection to choose from, including the Nike Pace Gloves (featured below). A classic running cap is brilliant for keeping rain out of your eyes. If it gets even colder, swap it for something like the Men's Asics Winter Running Beanie (featured below) to keep your head warm. There's no need to let the cold rain numb your fingers either. Chuck on a pair of running gloves and your hands stay toasty, so you can actually hold your keys once you get home.
Running vests are increasingly popular, and they tick plenty of boxes for rainy conditions too. Stashing your phone, keys, gels or drinks in a vest built with water-resistant material and a breathable design keeps them safe, leaving you to focus on smashing your session. You don't want to look down and see your belongings floating in a puddle! Check out the Unisex Salomon Hydra Access 4L Running Vest or the Unisex Karrimor Recon 2L Running Vest (featured below).
Get Out There And Enjoy The Rain
Once you're fully kitted out, it's time to face the weather. It's going to take a lot more than a few clouds to stop you. Focus purely on hitting your goals, and let's face it, it's always nice to look the part while doing it. Run well!
