Every runner has a Pegasus story. It's the shoe your first running club swore by, the one gathering dust in a mate's hallway, the dependable centre-back of the running world. Never flashy, always there. The Pegasus Plus 2 is what happens when that centre-back suddenly discovers overlapping runs.
It builds on the original Pegasus Plus, whose most common complaint was that it was narrow. Nike's clearly listened. The Plus 2 is built on a modified last called MR-10 2.0, which gives the forefoot and toe box more room and adds a bit of toe spring, while keeping the locked-in midfoot hold the Pegasus is known for.
Worth knowing before you get too excited, though: there's no wide option. So this is more breathing space rather than a whole new fit. Your toes get a bit more room to do their thing, but Nike hasn't exactly opened the floodgates.
The real magic happens under the ball of your foot. Nike's always tucked an Air Zoom unit into the Pegasus forefoot, basically a pod of spring-like threads that squash down and snap back. Normally, it's wrapped in foam, politely hidden from view. On the Peg Plus 2, it's out in the open.
The pod is exposed and curved, so your forefoot loads it more directly, and the curve mimics the rolling shape of a propulsive plate, the kind of geometry you'd usually find in racing shoes. Nike says the Plus 2 delivers 18% more energy return than the original Plus. That's the brand's figure rather than anything we've tested, but it tells you exactly where the shoe's priorities lie. This thing wants to move.
Around the pod, the foam has had a proper glow-up, too. The midsole is now full-length ZoomX, Nike's light, bouncy stuff, which the brand says makes the Plus 2 10% lighter than the Pegasus 42. Nike's team describes the pairing of ZoomX and forefoot Air as giving a propulsive feel from the front of the foot, and that's the pitch in a nutshell. Foam to cushion. Pod to pop.
Up top, it's an engineered mesh upper, built to stay light and breathable whether you're grinding through tempo reps or dragging yourself round a dull Tuesday jog. No fireworks, and that's fine. Sometimes an upper's best work is getting out of the way.
So where does it fit in the family? Right in the middle.
The Pegasus 42 is the everyday workhorse, with ReactX foam and a full-length Air Zoom unit for easy miles.
The Pegasus Premium chases maximum energy return with a mix of ZoomX and ReactX foam and a sculpted full-length Air unit.
The Peg Plus 2 slots between them, built for tempo runs, intervals and fast daily miles.
It's the one you reach for when the plan says "quick" but you can't face dragging the carbon racer out of its box. That's what makes it interesting. It's aimed at the runner who trains at a brisk jog, gets a little too excited about tempo sessions and might have a marathon PB quietly circled in the diary.
One shoe for the session and the commute home. Same dependable Pegasus badge. Now with ideas above its station.
