HALF MARATHON RUNNING SHOES: WHAT I LOOK FOR AND WHAT I WORE ON RACE DAY

Choosing the right half marathon running shoe can make a huge difference on race day. Over 13.1 miles, small details such as comfort, stability, weight and energy return start to add up, especially once fatigue kicks in. With so many options now available, from super shoes with carbon plates to more versatile race trainers, it can be difficult to know what actually matters. To help, our running ambassador Tommy Trees shares what he looks for in a half marathon shoe and the pair he trusted on race day.

As a running coach and competitive runner, I’ve tested a lot of shoes over the years and I’ve learned that the best half marathon shoe isn’t always simply the lightest or most expensive. It’s about finding the right balance between speed, comfort and confidence over the distance.

Here’s exactly what I look for in a half marathon race shoe, the models I rate most highly right now and the pair I wore for the Hackney Half Marathon.

WHY YOUR HALF MARATHON SHOE CHOICE MATTERS

Choosing the right half marathon running shoe can make a huge difference on race day. Over 13.1 miles, comfort, cushioning and efficiency all become increasingly important as fatigue starts to build.

As a running coach and competitive runner, I’ve tested a lot of shoes over the years and learned that the best race shoe isn’t always simply the lightest or most expensive. It’s about finding the right balance between speed, comfort and confidence.

Here’s what I look for in a half marathon running shoe, my top three picks right now and the pair I wore for the Hackney Half Marathon.

CRITERIA I LOOK FOR IN A HALF MARATHON RUNNING SHOE

Comfort & Fit

Comfort is still my number one priority. I want a shoe that feels secure through the heel and midfoot without being restrictive. Toe box shape also matters because feet naturally swell during longer races.

One of the biggest mistakes runners make is choosing a shoe based purely on hype or what elite athletes are wearing, rather than what actually suits their own foot shape. Some shoes naturally fit narrower, while others offer more room through the forefoot, and finding the right match for your feet makes a huge difference over 13.1 miles.

A shoe can have the best foam and plate technology available, but if it doesn’t fit your foot properly, it won’t perform well on race day. If a shoe causes hotspots, rubbing or pressure points in training, it’s not the right race-day shoe for you.

Energy Return & Responsiveness

This is where modern race shoes have changed massively over the last few years. Premium midsole foams now offer significantly more energy return than traditional EVA foams, helping reduce fatigue and improve efficiency over longer distances.

The best race shoes almost feel like they help maintain momentum for you. You’re still doing the work, obviously, but the shoe gives back energy with each stride and helps your legs stay fresher deeper into the race.

For the half marathon specifically, I want a shoe that feels responsive without becoming overly aggressive. Some marathon super shoes can feel slightly too soft or unstable at faster half marathon paces.

Weight & Race-Day Feel

Generally speaking, lighter shoes feel faster. Most dedicated half marathon race shoes now sit somewhere around the 180g–250g range, depending on the model and size. That said, the lightest shoe isn’t always automatically the best.

There’s always a trade-off between weight, cushioning and stability. A super-lightweight shoe might feel amazing for 5K pace efforts but leave your calves destroyed by mile 11. What I look for is a shoe that still feels nimble and fast without sacrificing protection.

Shock Absorption & Cushioning

Even for quicker runners, cushioning matters over the half marathon distance. Personally, I tend to prefer shoes with a reasonably high stack height at the heel, usually somewhere between 35mm and 40mm. That extra protection helps reduce impact loading and keeps the legs fresher later in the race.

The key is finding cushioning that still feels responsive rather than soft and sluggish. Good cushioning should protect your muscles without disconnecting you from the road.

Breathability & Upper Materials

This is something people often underestimate. A breathable upper makes a huge difference during harder efforts, especially during spring and summer races. Modern engineered mesh uppers are generally very lightweight and ventilated, which helps regulate temperature and reduce moisture build-up.

I also look at how the upper holds the foot during faster cornering and pace changes. Some ultra-thin race uppers can feel a little loose or unstable.

Traction & Outsole Durability

Grip becomes especially important in UK racing conditions. Road surfaces during races such as Hackney can vary significantly depending on the weather, corners and road markings. A shoe with poor traction can feel sketchy on wet corners or painted surfaces.

I always pay attention to rubber placement on the outsole and how confident the shoe feels during faster turns or damp conditions.

Stability, Drop & Fit

Not every runner needs a highly stable shoe, but everyone benefits from a shoe that complements their stride.

Some modern race shoes are extremely soft and narrow underfoot, which can work brilliantly for efficient runners but feel unstable for others. Personally, I usually prefer a slightly more stable platform for the half marathon compared with shorter races.

Heel-to-toe drop is another factor. Lower-drop shoes tend to load the calves more heavily, while higher-drop shoes can feel smoother for runners who naturally heel strike. The biggest thing is understanding your own biomechanics rather than simply buying whatever elite athletes are racing in.

Carbon Plates & Rocker Soles

Carbon plate technology has completely changed distance racing. For many runners, a carbon-plated shoe can genuinely improve running economy and reduce fatigue over the half marathon distance.

That said, they aren’t perfect for everyone. Carbon shoes tend to work best when you’re running at faster paces and landing efficiently through the midfoot or forefoot. Some runners also find them too stiff or aggressive.

Rockered soles can also help create smoother transitions through the stride, making it easier to maintain rhythm and turnover during longer races. Personally, I’m a big fan of plated shoes for racing, but I still think comfort and confidence come first.

MY TOP 3 HALF MARATHON RUNNING SHOE PICKS

1. Saucony Endorphin Elite 2

The Saucony Endorphin Elite 2 is one of the most exciting race shoes currently available for the half marathon distance.

What stands out immediately is how energetic and aggressive the ride feels without becoming overly harsh. The combination of Saucony’s premium foam and full-length carbon plate creates a really propulsive feel at faster paces while still offering enough cushioning to stay comfortable deep into the race.

Compared with some other super shoes, the Endorphin Elite 2 feels slightly more natural through transitions, especially for runners who like to maintain rhythm and cadence.

Who It Suits Best: Runners looking for a true race-day super shoe that feels explosive and efficient over the half marathon distance.

My Experience: This is one of the most fun race shoes I’ve tested recently. It feels incredibly lively once you pick up the pace and really rewards efficient running mechanics.

2. adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4

The Adios Pro 4  is probably one of the most balanced race shoes currently available.

It combines excellent cushioning with a surprisingly stable platform and still feels incredibly quick once you get up to speed. Compared with earlier versions, the ride feels smoother and more refined, particularly through transitions.

I also think it’s one of the better options for runners who want a race shoe that remains comfortable later into the race.

Who It Suits Best: Runners who want a versatile race shoe that feels fast but still controlled and protective.

My Experience: This is a shoe that feels particularly good over longer tempo sessions and progression runs. It’s forgiving enough for tired legs but still feels race-ready.

3. ASICS Metaspeed Sky Tokyo

ASICS have done an excellent job with the Metaspeed range, and the Sky Tokyo is probably the most naturally smooth shoe of the three for me. It feels incredibly efficient at steady hard efforts and does a great job of helping you maintain rhythm late in races.

The shoe works particularly well for runners who naturally lengthen their stride when increasing pace.

Who It Suits Best: Stride-focused runners who want a highly efficient race-day shoe for half marathon and marathon racing.

My Experience: This shoe feels incredibly smooth once you settle into a rhythm. It’s one of the easiest shoes to hold pace in over longer efforts.

TIPS FOR TRYING, TESTING & ROTATING YOUR HALF MARATHON SHOES

Don’t Leave Race Shoes Untested

One of the biggest mistakes runners make is saving race shoes purely for race day. You don’t need huge mileage in them, but you absolutely want to test them properly beforehand.

I’d normally recommend:

·       At least one longer steady run

·       One threshold or interval session

That gives you enough time to identify hotspots, instability or any issues with fit. If a shoe feels awkward or uncomfortable during training, it’s very unlikely to magically improve on race day.

Pay Attention to Recovery

Some super shoes feel amazing while running but can leave your calves or feet heavily fatigued afterwards. That’s something worth monitoring during training. The best race shoe should help you run efficiently without leaving your body excessively fatigued afterwards.

Why I Rotate Running Shoes

I’m a big believer in having more than one pair of running shoes.

Typically, I’ll rotate between:

·       A daily trainer for easy mileage

·       A workout shoe for sessions and tempo runs

·       A dedicated race-day shoe

This not only helps extend the lifespan of each shoe but also allows the midsole foam to recover between harder sessions. It also reduces repetitive loading patterns on the body, which can help from an injury-prevention perspective.

If you’re serious about improving your running, having a simple shoe rotation can genuinely make a difference.

WHAT I WORE FOR THE HACKNEY HALF MARATHON

For the Hackney Half Marathon, I raced in the adidas Adizero Adios Pro 4. It gave me the best combination of speed, cushioning and stability for the half marathon distance.

The Endorphin Elite 2 probably felt slightly more aggressive and explosive over shorter races, but I found the Adios Pro 4 a little more forgiving later in the race, particularly through the calves and lower legs.

The grip was another factor. UK race conditions are rarely perfect, and the Adios Pro outsole gave me more confidence on tighter corners and damp roads.

Most importantly, it was the shoe I felt most relaxed and efficient in during longer race-pace sessions, and confidence matters massively on race day.

BOTTOM LINE

There’s no single perfect half marathon shoe for everyone. The best option depends on your goals, running style, biomechanics and what gives you confidence on race day. For some runners, that’ll mean an ultra-aggressive carbon racer. For others, it’ll be a slightly more forgiving shoe that allows them to stay comfortable and efficient all the way to the finish.

The key is finding the shoe that feels right for you, not just the one everyone else is wearing. Modern race shoes are incredible now, and there are more genuinely good options available than ever before. If you can combine comfort, confidence and efficiency in one shoe, you’ll give yourself the best possible chance of performing well on race day.
