WHAT TO WEAR ON A SUMMER EVENING CYCLE

Published: 20/08/2026 | By: Will Sendel

Summer evenings are made for getting out on two wheels. Whether you’re heading out for a ride after work or taking the long way home, you‘ll want to stay comfortable from the first mile to the last. From breathable layers to extra visibility, here’s what to wear on those evening cycles that you want to last forever.

There’s something about a summer evening ride: the temperature drops enough to make the miles comfortable; the roads are quieter and there’s still plenty of daylight to keep your ride scenic. But getting your kit right can make all the difference when you’re going from sweltering sun to early evening sunset. Get the basics right and you’ll be thinking up ways of adding miles on, not looking for shortcuts home.

START WITH A BREATHABLE BASE

A lightweight cycling jersey is the place to start. Breathable fabrics help move sweat away from your skin, while a close fit keeps things comfortable without getting in the way. Look for mesh panels or moisture-wicking materials if you’re heading out while temperatures are still high. Something like this one from Pinnacle is ideal for keeping you moving at your best.

If you’re just planning a relaxed ride, a lightweight technical T-shirt can work too. The key is choosing something that keeps you cool without feeling heavy once you’ve built up some speed.

DON’T FORGET THE SHORTS

A pair of cycling shorts is something you’ll regret not wearing. There are few things as uncomfortable as chafing two miles into your journey. A quality pair of padded shorts like the USA Pro Cycling Shorts make longer rides considerably more comfortable, giving you the support and cushioning you need when you’re spending time in the saddle.

If your ride is shorter, lightweight cycling shorts are an easy option. Either way, breathable fabric is something to prioritise when the temperature is up, and padding is never a bad idea.

PACK A LAYER FOR LATER

This is where summer evening rides differ from your average cycle. It might feel warm when you set off, but expect temperatures to drop quickly once the sun starts to disappear.

A lightweight cycling jacket or gilet is easy to pack away and gives you an extra layer when you need it. Look for something wind-resistant and compact enough to carry without taking up much room. It might also be worth choosing a waterproof option – we all know how unpredictable the weather can be.

BE SEEN AFTER DARK

The light will fade quicker than you expect, especially in summer. If your ride is likely to continue into the evening, visibility should be a priority.

Reflective details on your clothes help you stand out to other road users, while front and rear bike lights are essential once it get dark. It’s a small addition that might seem like overkill in the sun, but will make a huge difference to your safety when it goes down.

FINISH WITH THE RIGHT ACCESSORIES

These are the little things that’ll take your ride from good to perfect. A pair of cycling gloves offer an extra level of grip, while cycling sunglasses protect your eyes from bright sunlight, wind and insects. And don’t forget your helmet – summer or not, it’s an essential part of the checklist that you should never cycle without.

The right kit can make a summer evening ride feel less like a workout and more like a reward. Keep things lightweight and breathable while the sun is still out but be ready for cooler temperatures and lower light as the evening goes on. With the right layers, comfortable essentials and plenty of visibility, you’ll be ready to make the most of every mile.
